Privacy policy
Updated 24 August 2026.
The data controller is not yet named on this page. It must be before opening to the public: without it, this policy identifies nobody.
What is collected
An account is optional: Cockpit works entirely without one, and offline. If you create one, the service keeps your email address, a hash of your password (never the password itself) or your Google id, the name and picture you choose to show, and the list of machines you connect — their name and operating system. Synchronising also keeps what you hand it: projects, folders, tasks, links, commands and notes. The contents of your working files never leave your machine.
Why
For one reason: finding your data again on another machine, and letting you work as a team. Nothing is used for profiling, nothing is sold, nothing goes to an advertising service. The server does not read the contents of what it synchronises: it stores it and hands it back, without interpreting it.
For how long
As long as your account exists. When it is deleted, everything goes with it — machines, access tokens and synchronised data — with no copy kept aside. Deletion is permanent and immediate.
Who has access
The service runs on a machine we hold ourselves, not at a host with access to the data. One third party is involved: the service that delivers invitation emails, which therefore sees the recipient address and the team name. Members of a team you join see your name and address — nothing you synchronise.
Your rights
You can read and correct your data from your own space, and ask for its deletion at contact@cockpitdesktop.com — or do it yourself, an account deletion being permanent. You can also simply not create an account: the software is complete without one.
The software
Cockpit may send technical reports when something fails: the version, the operating system, and the context of the failure. Never the contents of your files or your terminals. It is a setting, under Settings then General, and you can turn it off — the welcome screen says so and points you to it.
Cookies
Two cookies, and none for advertising: the one remembering your chosen language, and your session cookie when signed in. Site analytics, when enabled, run on a tool we host ourselves, with no cookie and no tracking across sites.
